Mastering Thirds, Drives & Drops

About this event

Mastering Thirds, Drives and Drops

This is the single biggest skill separating 3.0 players from 3.5+ players: what you do with the third shot. Most players either drop when they should drive, drive when they should drop, or get stuck in no-man's-land on the way in. In this clinic you'll build a reliable third-shot drop, a purposeful drive that sets up your next ball, and, most importantly, the judgment to know which one the moment calls for. Then you'll learn to move from the baseline to the kitchen line without getting picked apart in the transition zone. Four players, 90 minutes, real reps and real feedback. Walk out knowing how to get to the net on your terms.

You'll work on: reading the return to pick drop vs. drive; a soft, repeatable third-shot drop; a low, weaponized drive that creates weak replies; the drive-then-drop combination; and controlled transition-zone movement with resets so you stop losing points on the way in.

90-Minute Session Outline (max 4 players)

Warm-up (10 min)

Dynamic movement, kitchen dinking to soft hands, then baseline drop feeds to get the arm loose. Coach frames the day: the third shot is a decision, not a single shot.

Block 1: The Drop (20 min)

Mechanics covering a low-to-high swing path, loose grip, contact out front, and an arc over the net that lands soft in the NVZ. Coach hand-feeds reps, then players run live serve/return into third-shot drops. Cue: aim for the top of the net's far side, not the line.

Block 2: The Drive (20 min)
