Growing A Community Pickleball Club

Growing A Community Pickleball Club

Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in North America. It truly is a game for all ages. CourtReserve sat down with one of our current clients, Oliver Pickleball Club located in Oliver, BC. They are a seasonal outdoor club focused on active adults, many of whom are retired. Their club is comprised of mostly intermediate level players, level 3.0 to 4.0. Their goal is to promote the game of pickleball to all those ADULTS who want to be active and have FUN.

Todd talked about all aspects of the club including the courts, management, members, fees, classes and more. One of the best ideas we talked about from a community non-profit club was to make sure and keep the players playing within their range or level. Level Play or Open Play was the most popular event they had and was played mornings, mid-day, evenings and weekends.

The club has been offering free classes to learn how to play pickleball and now they have a waiting list of potential members. The players love it and want to become members in just a few weeks.

They are raising money to build new courts and he found that through their growing membership and COVID they actually were really busy during their normal off season. They found an open warehouse space and now use it during the winter months. We had several questions from attendees around building courts and how big do you dream or plan. Todd reminded us of the great balance of what you dream of may be different than what your club can afford and being mindful of your growth rate for expansion.

Todd also mentions that a lot of their members really leaned in and started volunteering their time. A couple of them have decided to become certified pickleball rating testers through IPTPA. You can learn more about the IPTPA Rating Specialists by visiting them  IPTPA Website
